Alex,
These are great suggestions. It is my belief that every BA should think of themselves as a consultant. If you are an employee, you are an internal consultant but the skills needed are really the same. Thanks for your contribution.
Regards,
Angie

Much of what you descibe is what I need to follow as a freelance business analyst. In addition, I need to understand the organisation change process (if there is one) and organisational structure very quickly so that I am not disadvantaged.

I have often equated this to a consultant's approach. Not exactly sure what this means but this is my take ;-)

You need to be:
- proactive
- take ownership
- identify issues and suggest resolutions
- produce a plan with timescales and deliverables (informally or otherwise)

In addition, you need to talk to all the key stakeholders as quickly as possible. Ask them what about their concerns. What do they see as the risks and what are their key requirements?

You will be able to focus your efforts based on this information and demonstrate you are there to support their business needs and don't have your own agenda.
You will also start to earn the stakeholders' trust which you will need for their full and active cooperation which is key to your success as a business analyst.
